Ozan Tufan's late goal denied Sunderland an against-the-odds Championship win after Ross Stewart had returned from a four-month injury absence to give them the lead at Hull.
In a game packed with incident, the Black Cats survived a penalty, red card and two worrying injuries to take the lead through Stewart as Hull's woeful home form continued.
They were denied a third consecutive away win as Hull's Turkish midfielder Tufan popped up to turn in the equaliser with eight minutes left and end a run of four home defeats.
Sunderland defender Danny Batth was forced off through injury early in the game and his replacement Dan Ballard gave away a penalty early in the second half with a foul on Regan Slater.
The Tigers' top scorer Oscar Estupinan, who has now scored just once in 14 appearances, took the spot-kick and dragged it wide.
Hull were given further encouragement when Sunderland midfielder Elliot Embleton was dismissed for a high boot, receiving the red card as he was stretchered off for an injury sustained in making the challenge.
Stewart, however, defied Hull's one-man advantage, racing on to Patrick Roberts' astute pass and slotting home his sixth goal of the season.
The Black Cats could not hold on to the lead, as Ryan Woods' cross was diverted home by Tufan for the equaliser.
Hull boss Liam Rosenior told BBC Radio Humberside:
"I'm disappointed to not win the game. The first half was quite edgy and neither team looked like scoring and I told the lads at half-time to have a little more confidence and belief in the way that we play.
"We won the penalty and got on the front foot and were in complete control. Unfortunately we've missed it - it happens, Harry Kane misses penalties as well.
"Then the red card happens and I feel for the lad because I think he's got a really bad injury, but it's one of those where it is a red card - I've just watched it back.
"I was worried because when you have that much control and dominance you can switch off. I was screaming to the players once I saw the red card to Sunderland to stay switched on when we had the ball and we didn't for one moment in the second half and paid the price.
"But we showed a great deal of resilience and character to play our way back into the game with a great goal from Ozan and great bit of play from Ryan Woods."
Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio Newcastle:
"He's [Elliot Embleton] gone to hospital, he's been taken to hospital in an ambulance and is in a lot of discomfort. I don't really want to comment on what we think it is.
"Our club doctor thought it was serious enough for him to go to hospital. He's in a lot of pain and hopefully will get looked after well. It looks like a bad injury.
"I've watched it back super-slow and think the referee will be disappointed when he sees it. He's sent the player off - the ball was bouncing and they both jumped. Elliot catches him with his knee in the player's arm. He does flick his foot but there's no contact as he's falling backwards, maybe natural to protect yourself to try to prevent falling on your back hard.
"The contact was with the player's arm with his knee. It happened fast and maybe the player rolling round and holding his head made him make that decision.
"We generally controlled the game in the first half - on breakaways they had a threat."
