Grimsby's John McAtee scoered his fourth goal of the season

John McAtee's stunning volley was not enough to earn Grimsby Town victory over Newport County at Blundell Park.

Striker McAtee made the most of a half chance when he fired in his fourth of the season to give the hosts the lead.

But the shock FA Cup quarter-finalists could not hold out as County drew level, Priestley Farquharson bundled in a corner at the far post on 55 minutes.

Grimsby finish the evening 16th in League Two, one point and two places above Newport.

Omar Bogle should have put Newport ahead as early as the ninth minute against his former club.

The striker was played through by Harry Charsley only to shoot straight at goalkeeper Max Crocombe.

Crocombe was again called into action to comfortably save a low drive from the edge of the box by Nathan Moriah-Welsh.

However opposite number Joe Day ensured the teams shared a point when he denied John Taylor from close range in stoppage time.

Grimsby climb one place despite just one win from seven in League Two while a draw halts a run of two defeats for Newport.

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan told BBC Sport Wales: "I would have liked to have won that game 1-0, we shot ourselves in the foot, but the character and resilience in this group is second to none.

"I thought we were very good tonight, we had two good opportunities in the first half but we just need them to go in and cut out the basic errors.

"We're getting chances and creating, but there are a few bits and pieces if we can improve on you're looking at a really good group of boys."
