Altrincham 1-2 Wrexham: O'Connell marks debut with winner

Eoghan O'Connell scored the late winner on his debut as Wrexham triumphed at Altrincham to maintain the pressure on National League leaders Notts County.

Alty captain Jordan Hulme hit the bar in a first half in which Wrexham's Tom O'Connor and Luke Young had chances.

Ollie Palmer netted Elliot Lee's cross to put Wrexham ahead before Miles Welsh-Hayes levelled for the hosts with a low drive on 81 minutes.

But O'Connell won it five minutes later after Sam Dalby's header hit the bar.

The defender was making his debut following his move from Charlton Athletic on transfer deadline day.

Wrexham remain second in the table, three points behind County but with two games in hand while Altrincham are 14th.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said:

"First half I thought we were off it - didn't do the basics well enough to give us a foothold of the game. Credit to Altrincham I thought they played really well first half.

"Second half we were loads better and gave ourselves a platform to go and win the game. We got a good first goal from Ollie and then a great strike to make it 1-1.

"I'm so pleased the way the lads have responded again. It was great for big Eoghan to mark his debut with a goal."
