Reading striker Natasha Dowie has called her return to Liverpool on loan for the rest of the season "surreal" - 11 years after she began her first spell.

During three years at Liverpool, Dowie was top scorer in the 2013 Women's Super League and named FA players' player of the year.

The former England international, 34, scored seven goals in 27 games for Reading.

"It's been a surreal last couple of days," said Dowie. "It all happened quite quick.

"But I'm over the moon to be back. This is my home, this is where I've got such great memories - the best memories really of my football career, winning the league here."

Only bottom side Leicester City have scored fewer goals than Liverpool's 11 in the Women's Super League this season.

Katie Stengel, with seven goals, is the only player to have scored more than twice for Liverpool.

Reds head coach Matt Beard, who also took Dowie to the now-defunct Boston Breakers in the US between 2016 and 2018, said: "The biggest thing for us is that 'Tats' is a goal scorer.

"If you look at her record, it's consistently a goal every other game throughout her career. When the opportunity arose to bring her in - the fact she's a Liverpool fan, as well - we felt it was a good move for us and a good move for her."

Dowie won the FA Cup and League Cup during five years with Everton before joining Liverpool in 2012.

She has also played in the United States, Australia, Sweden and Norway, and scored five goals for England in 2013 and 2014.
