Wrexham 1-0 Southend United - Hosts set club record to stay clear at top

  • Published

Wrexham maintained their grip at the top of the National League as they ground out victory over Southend.

Ollie Palmer's header was well saved by Steve Arnold as the hosts pressed for an opener.

But the Southend goalkeeper then fumbled a Ben Tozer cross into his own net to give Wrexham the lead.

Arnold deflected Eoghan O'Connell 's shot onto a post and Dan Mooney wasted a good chance for the Shrimpers when he mis-kicked his effort from 12 yards.

Wrexham, who worked hard to clear the pitch of snow to ensure the game was played, were rewarded with a new club record of 25 league matches unbeaten, and a 17th win in 18 home games.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson:

"It was always going to be a different type of game because of the conditions.

"It was very, very tough to play in and we just had to roll our sleeves up and dig deep as a team.

"We restricted a good Southend team to very little."
