Hartlepool United dropped into the League Two relegation zone as Omar Bogle and Mickey Demetriou struck at Rodney Parade for Newport County.
Bogle fired in the opener from close range and Demetriou added the second before the break.
The visitors had the better of much of the second half, but could not find a response in front of goal.
Crawley Town rose to 22nd, one place above Hartlepool courtesy of their 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers.
Victory also eased Newport's fears of moving to the wrong end of the table, with Crawley's win also boosting the Exiles end-of-season prospects.
Newport County boss Graham Coughlan said:
"I thought we were very good today. We got the reaction we wanted… that came from the first header.
"Mickey Demetriou, he went through the header. He punched it right back where it come from and that set the tempo for us.
"I thought the pressing and energy levels was very, very impressive."
