Guernsey's women face an uphill task if they are to win a medal at the 2023 Island Games after they lost 3-2 to Ynys Mon in their opening match.

Goals from Ellie Jones and Jennifer Cox put the Welsh side 2-0 up inside the opening 30 minutes.

Guernsey came back as Calleigh Hedley converted a penalty before getting another six minutes from half time.

But Jessica Jones' goal midway through the second half secured the win despite strong Guernsey pressure late on.

Guernsey almost levelled with 19 minutes to go as Hedley rounded the goalkeeper but her shot from a tight angle just went past the wrong side of the post while the Sarnians saw a header whistle just wide in the final minute.

The loss means Guernsey must beat Western Isles, who were 6-1 winners over Ynys Mon on Sunday, in their final group game, to stand a chance of going through.

But Guernsey's men remain on course for the last four following a 4-1 victory over Aland.

Charlton Gauvain's effort off the post from inside the penalty in the opening minutes gave the hosts the perfect start against the 2009 silver medallists.

Ross Allen had a chance to double the lead 15 minutes later but put his effort wide while Guernsey also hit the post from a corner.

But just before the break Alan equalised through a Joel Karlstrom penalty, but Guernsey FC top scorer Allen restored his island's lead seconds later as the Sarnians scored soon after the kick off.

And the hosts, in front of a big crowd at The Track, pulled away early in the second period as Matt Loaring got a 52nd-minute third after a clever free kick and Gauvain got his second four minutes later.

Aland's goalkeeper produced a fine string of saves to deny Guernsey as the second half wore on.

The win puts Guernsey top of their group on goal difference from the isle of Wight, who also recorded a second successive victory with a 1-0 win over Western Isles.

It means Guernsey only need a draw in their final game top progress to the semi-finals on goal difference.
