Connah's Quay Nomads were undone by two second half goals as they were beaten by Icelandic side KA Akureyri in the Europa Conference League first qualifying round first leg.

Hallgrímur Mar Steingrímsson gave the hosts the lead before Daniel Hafsteinsson sealed the win.

The the return leg is at Park Hall on Thursday, 20 July.

Connah's Quay qualified for Europe after finishing Cymru Premier runners-up last season.

Akureyri, competing in Europe for the first time in two decades, are currently sixth in Iceland's top flight.

Nomads keeper Andy Firth made a crucial save inside the opening three minutes to deny Jakob Snaer Arnason.

The visitors responded with Harry Franklin's volley blocked, then Declan Poole was denied with his effort from the resultant corner.

Franklin went close again before Firth saved Rodrigo Mateo's effort from the edge of the area.

Noah Edwards, who rejoined Nomads over the summer, had the visitors' best chance of an entertaining first half when his half volley forced Kristijan Jajalo into a save.

Callum Bratley had an effort saved before the home side broke the deadlock on the hour mark as Steingrimsson's shot found the top corner of the net.

Declan Poole's curling effort flew past the post while he sent a free-kick over the bar, but Hafsteinsson scored Akureyri's second goal to give them the advantage ahead of the second leg in a week's time.
