Partick Thistle consigned Dundee United to a second Viaplay Cup group-stage defeat within four days.

Jim Goodwin's side were beaten by League 2 newcomers Spartans on Saturday and this time lost 2-1 at home to one of their Scottish Championship rivals.

Motherwell were held in a 3-3 thriller away to Queen of the South but took the penalty shoot-out bonus point.

Championship winners Dundee edged fourth-tier Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic by the only goal of the game.

While Tony Docherty began his time as manager at Dens Park with a win, neighbours United will almost certainly fail to progress to the knockout stages after two defeats that mount early pressure on Goodwin after last season's relegation.

Having beaten United in their first game as a Scottish Professional Football League club, Spartans came within two minutes of drawing with League 1 side Falkirk before losing 2-1 at home.

Scottish League Cup scores

Group A

Alloa Athletic took the lead through a Quinn Coulson free kick after the break, but a Paul McLean header and a Dale Carrick penalty after Dale Hilson was fouled by David McKay gave the visitors a 2-1 win in the match-up between two League 1 sides.

Mark McKenzie fired the only goal of the game as second-tier Ayr United edged League 2 visitors Stenhousemuir.

Group B

Craig Sibbald fired Dundee United into an 18th-minute lead, but Brian Graham matched that before half-time and Harry Milne headed the winner shortly before the hour mark.

Tom Lang headed Falkirk into the lead form a sixth-minute corner, but Blair Henderson's second goal in two games drew Spartans level on the hour only for Ross MacIver to grab a late close-range winner for the visitors.

Group C: Cove Rangers 5-2 Clyde, Hamilton Academical 1-0 Brechin City

After losing three goals on Saturday having only been able to name three substitutes, Clyde's woes continued with one extra replacement as Kyle Connell fired hosts Cove Rangers into a 13th-minute lead.

Although Martin Rennie levelled from the penalty spot seven minutes later, a double from Rumarn Burrell and further finishes from Mitch Megginson and Connell had the League 1 side on easy street before the team from the league below replied late through Cameron Mulvanny.

Hamilton Academical struggled to replicate their convincing win over Clyde, with Kevin O'Hara's 22nd-minute penalty enough to beat visiting Highland League champions Brechin City.

Group D

Goals from Jack Bair, Cameron Blues and Robbie Crawford gave Championship hosts Greenock Morton a convincing win over League 2 side Stranraer.

Group E

Zak Rudden's striker two minutes after half-time was enough to give Premiership newcomers the three points against League 2 hosts Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic.

But Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away to Dumbarton.

Ryan Wallace and Tony Wallace had the League 2 side heading for victory before Billy Mckay gave the visitors hope with 15 minutes remaining.

Group F: Dunfermline Athletic 4-0 Annan Athletic, Raith Rovers 2-0 Albion Rovers

League 1 champions Dunfermline Athletic swept aside the side who will be competing in that division for the first time this season as an own goal from Annan Athletic's Matty Douglas followed Sam Fisher's opener before a double from Lewis McCann.

Raith Rovers left it late to subdue Lowland League visitors Albion Rovers through a Josh Mullin drive and Conor Duffy own goal.

Group G

Motherwell left with the bonus point from their topsy-turvy six-goal affair in Dumfries.

McKechnie gave League 1 hosts Queen of the South an 18th-minute lead, but Blair Spittal replied for the Premiership visitors before the break and Callum Slattery edged them in front after half-time.

Gavin Reilly equalised twice after Spittal had edged Well in front once more, with the visitors winning the shoot-out 5-4.

Nathan Austin struck a hat-trick as East Fife eased to victory over League 2 rivals Elgin City.

The striker scored at either end of the first half and, although the visitors struck back through Russell Dingwall with 13 minutes left, Austin secured the three points two minutes later.

Group H

Josh Skelly's 26th-minute penalty set up League 2 side Forfar Athletic for a derby win away to Montrose.

Seb Ross fired the visitors' second before the break, with the League 1 hosts' Kane Hester replying after half-time.
