Seb Palmer-Houlden struck early to give Newport County the upper hand against Doncaster Rovers

Newport County bounced back from their League Two opening day defeat to breeze past winless Doncaster Rovers.

The hosts led when Seb Palmer-Houlden muscled past Joe Olowu to score, before Will Evans turned in Shane McLoughlin's parried shot.

Newport went further ahead when the ball ricocheted off the unfortunate Richard Wood for an own goal.

Evans struck again after being picked out by McLoughlin, although Tommy Rowe almost found a late Rovers consolation.

Doncaster, although victorious in the Carabao Cup first round at Hull City, will now look to get off the mark in the league at home to Mansfield Town on Tuesday night, while Newport are away at Crewe Alexandra.

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan said:

"It was pleasing, it was a good all-round performance from start to finish... we got the fourth goal and the game fizzled out.

"No exaggeration but we could have come in five or six goals (ahead) in the first half, we were really, really good.

"Let's put it in our back pocket and build on it. We didn't have a nice feeling last Saturday (losing 3-0 at Accrington Stanley), albeit our performance was okay, but now we've got a really good feeling and that's football I suppose."
