Mickey Demetriou returned to haunt former club Newport County with two goals for new side Crewe Alexandra.

Demetriou pounced when goalkeeper Nick Townsend spilled a free-kick and, although Will Evans headed Newport level, Demetriou then volleyed home Joel Tabiner's free-kick.

Chris Long added a third Crewe goal from the penalty spot after Ryan Delaney brought down Elliott Nevitt.

Nevitt then tucked away a fourth before Harry Charsley scored for Newport.

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan:

"We were very good in the first half and very poor in the second half. The defending left a lot to be desired, I've just had a little go at them (the players) in there (dressing room), it's defending you wouldn't see in a public park on a Sunday morning.

"We did look tired in the second half to be fair; you could see the energy, you could see what we were trying to do in the first half but we just never got going in the second half.

"They controlled the game, they moved the ball a little bit quicker, they used the width and we just couldn't get up to speed... even making changes."
