Ipswich held their nerve to edge through to the third round of the EFL Cup on penalties at League One Reading.

Brandon Williams' own-goal 74 seconds into his Ipswich debut put the hosts ahead but Cameron Humphreys and Freddie Ladapo turned the tie on its head for the Championship high-fliers.

In-form Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan's late leveller sent the tie to spot-kicks but the Royals could only convert one of the four penalties they took as Town prevailed 3-1.

The third round draw will be made on Wednesday night with ties to take place the week commencing 25 September.

The Royals went ahead when a low cross from the left cannoned into his own net off Manchester United loanee Williams, but the visitors rallied and Lee Evans and Ladapo saw efforts saved by Coniah Boyce-Clarke.

Humphreys eventually levelled five minutes into added time, turning over the line after Chelsea loanee Omari Hutchinson had blazed his way down the right flank before fizzing the ball across goal.

Ladapo turned the tie around with a cool finish just before the hour after a superb Evans through ball, but Ehibhatiomhan strode forward to send the tie to spot-kicks late-on.

The first three penalties were converted but Charlie Savage saw his effort saved by Cieran Slicker and Caylan Vickers blazed over and although Sone Aluko saw his subsequent kick saved by Boyce-Clarke, Ben Elliot also put his Reading attempts over the bar.
