Newport County's Will Evans missed their midweek Carabao Cup defeat against Brentford with injury

Newport County fought back from two down to earn a home draw against AFC Wimbledon in League Two.

James Tilley scored his sixth goal of the season after nine minutes to put the visitors ahead, before netting his second on the half hour mark.

Will Evans, back from injury, scored in first half stoppage time to halve the deficit and Omar Bogle levelled 10 minutes into the second half.

Tilley almost had a hat-trick late on, but instead hit the side netting.

Both teams remain in the League Two play-off places - Wimbledon in fifth and Newport sixth - as each continue their positive starts to the season.

Newport boss Graham Coughlan:

"It was a really, really tough afternoon and look, I've got to take my hat off to Wimbledon as well, because you could actually see - and I think the four goals were down to the midweek excursions of two teams that went toe-to-toe with Premier League teams (in the EFL Cup).

"And you could see both teams and then you chuck a red hot day, a boiling hot day and on top as well. So you can probably see the fatigue factor, the mental and the physical tiredness that set into the players.

"And it was four goals that went in was probably down to fatigue… fair play to the two clubs, the two teams, the two set of players for what they produced today on the back of a tough, tough week, mentally and physically."
