Colchester have appointed ex-Crawley boss Matthew Etherington as interim head coach after Ben Garner was sacked.

Etherington, who steps up from his role as under-21 lead coach at Colchester, lasted just 32 days as Crawley boss after being appointed in November 2022.

The 42-year-old now takes over as Garner's replacement "while the club considers its long-term options".

Garner was dismissed with the U's second bottom in League Two after four successive defeats.

Etherington's first game as interim boss will be against Grimsby Town on Tuesday.

He will be assisted by Scott Marshall and Dave Huzzey, who both worked under Garner.
