Ipswich winger Marcus Harness hopes his point-saving double against Birmingham will improve his chances of more league starts for the club.

Harness has made 12 Championship appearances this season - but 11 have come as a substitute.

He was sent on in the 72nd minute at St Andrew's and scored twice to deny Wayne Rooney a first win as Birmingham boss.

"I'm happy to keep contributing and keep throwing my name in the hat," the 27-year-old told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"There's a lot of games to come over the next couple of months and all the lads that have been coming on towards the end of games have shown that we're ready to contribute.

"I came here to get promoted and to play in the Championship. All I can do is keep working hard and keep trying to affect games and the rest will take care of itself."

Harness joined Ipswich from Portsmouth in the summer of 2022 and contributed six goals to their successful League One promotion campaign, plus a further two in cup competitions.

His double against Birmingham meant he has four in his past five Championship appearances and he said their late rally from 2-0 down showed Ipswich have resilience to go with the goalscoring ability that has put them second in the table.

"It's something that we've shown for a long time now, last season included. We're not always going to dominate every game and just because we're doing well doesn't mean it's easy," Harness continued.

"It was a difficult game but we've shown a lot of character to not throw in the towel and to fight until the end and get a point out of the game.

"2-0 is always a weird scoreline. When you're ahead, if you concede one goal, everything changes. Their crowd got a bit edgy and when we were coming on, the subs, we believed we could get a goal and it would change everything."

Ipswich can move to within one point of leaders Leicester if they can win at Rotherham on Tuesday - a game postponed on 20 October when Storm Babet caused flooding near the New York Stadium.

"It'll be a different test and we'll be ready to fly into the game and hopefully get another result," Harness added.
