Republic of Ireland: No Seamus Coleman or Sammie Szmodics in Stephen Kenny's squad
- Published
Veteran defender Seamus Coleman and in-form Sammie Szmodics are not included in the Republic of Ireland's final Euro 2024 qualifier in the Netherlands.
Blackburn Rovers forward Szmodics is the top scorer in the Championship while Coleman has been playing for Everton Under-21s as he makes his return from injury.
The Republic will also play New Zealand in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium.
Liverpool stopper Caoimhin Kelleher and Excelsior's Troy Parrott are recalled.
Parrott has scored three goals in eight league appearances while on loan at Eredivisie club Excelsior Rotterdam from Tottenham Hotspur, while Kelleher returns to the squad after missing October's matches through injury.
Szmodics, who has scored nine times for Blackburn this season, has been named in two of Stephen Kenny's previous squads but is yet to win a cap after withdrawing through injury and for personal reasons.
Sheffield United defender John Egan and Hull City's Aaron Connolly will miss both matches through injury.
Coleman sustained a knee injury while playing for Everton in May and recently returned to action for the club's under-21s.
"We'd love to have him here but he has been out for seven-and-a-half months," Kenny said about Coleman on Thursday.
"The Netherlands game, it is probably a bridge too far to jump into an international game straight from there."
He added on Szmodics: "He obviously had to leave on the second day of the last camp for personal reasons.
"Those personal reasons haven't changed. He just can't be away for 10 days so he can't be considered."
James McClean is not included in the squad for the Netherlands game but will be included for the friendly against New Zealand for what will be his 103rd and final Republic of Ireland appearance as he gets ready to retire from international football.
Manager Kenny has been under pressure after an underwhelming Euro 2024 qualification campaign. The Republic have only won two of their seven qualifiers - both to lowly Gibraltar - and cannot reach the finals in Germany next summer through Group B.
