Brendon Hanlan: Wycombe bring in Lyle Taylor after striker ruled out for rest of season

Brandon Hanlan has played 98 games for Wycombe since arriving from Bristol Rovers

Wycombe striker Brandon Hanlan is unlikely to play again this season because of a serious knee injury.

Hanlan damaged his anterior cruciate ligament against Stevenage on Saturday, leading to an additional 14 minutes being played in the first half.

The 26-year-old, who joined Wycombe in 2021, has scored three goals in 19 games for the Chairboys this term.

The club have signed free-agent former Nottingham Forest striker Lyle Taylor to boost their options up front.

The 33-year-old Montserrat international has agreed a short-term deal, having been released by Forest over the summer.

He has not played a league game since May 2022, when he was on loan at Birmingham City.

"Lyle is really hungry to prove he's still got goals in his feet. He's a player of great calibre, who's played at a really high level," said boss Matt Bloomfield.

Lyle Taylor's previous clubs also include Bournemouth, Sheffield United, AFC Wimbledon and Charlton

Both Hanlan and Luke Leahy, who was injured in a clash of heads with team-mate Josh Scowen in stoppage time at the end of the game, had to be taken to hospital.

"It's hard to take right now and a long road to recovery but I will be back stronger," Hanlan posted on social media.

Leahy's injury led to suggestions from Stevenage, who won 1-0, that Wycombe tried to persuade the referee to call off the game - a claim head coach Bloomfield "categorically" denied.

"I think the anger and frustration has changed to sadness and disappointment," he told BBC Three Counties Radio on Thursday.

"I think it will take a while for that sadness and disappointment to leave me because we lost two very good players on Saturday, one was obviously an accident and one was a serious injury during a challenge.

"For our boys, I'm disappointed for them."
