Stockport County failed to break the record for the longest winning streak in English football's fourth tier after Newport County ended their 12-win run.

Bryn Morris gave Newport the lead, letting fly from the edge of the box from Shane McLoughlin's lay-back.

Stockport fell further behind when the ball was half-cleared to McLoughlin, who thundered in a left-foot shot.

Isaac Olaofe pulled back a consolation goal deep in time added on, but the chance to set a new record was gone.

Dave Challinor's side had equalled the previous record - which had been set by Luton Town in 2001-02 - by beating Colchester United last weekend, having begun their winning run on 9 September with a 2-1 victory at AFC Wimbledon.

Stockport must now be content with sharing the record with their fellow Hatters and can concentrate on securing promotion, still retaining a five-point lead at the top of the table over Wrexham.

There was some poignancy that it was Newport County who ended Stockport's bid for the outright record, with the Exiles having held it themselves some four decades ago courtesy of a 10-game winning streak compiled between February and April 1980.

That 10-game mark was matched by Notts County in 1997-98, Swindon Town in 2011-12 and Northampton Town in 2015-16, with only Luton and Stockport going beyond.

The upset win was much-needed for Newport, who came into the game with just two wins from 12 and looking over their shoulder at the relegation places but now climb to 16th.

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan said:

"You can probably see why I get annoyed, why I get angry... because those lads are capable of that, and I know they're capable of that, and it's just getting that consistency week-in week-out, keeping those standards.

"It's a great victory... but we want to be a consistent team, we don't want to be a team that delivers once or twice a month.... let's string a few together and I might crack a smile.

"I'm frustrated because I'm a centre-half and I like clean sheets... but I thought overall our performance was really good.

"There's not a lot of teams in the league can live with Stockport, let alone match them and a lot of credit must go to them for what they've done."
