Dundee United reclaimed their place at the top of the Scottish Championship with a hard-fought win over Ayr United.

Kai Fotheringham's scrambled second-half effort was enough to return Jim Goodwin's side, who slipped from the summit after Raith Rovers' win on Friday, back above their rivals.

Only a point separates the two, who will meet at Tannadice next Saturday.

Victory was deserved for United, who had an early Louis Moult effort disallowed and had the better of the chances throughout.

Ayr, meanwhile, drop down to seventh place.
