Jim McIntyre has been appointed Arbroath manager on an 18-month contract.

The former Dunfermline Athletic, Queen of the South, Ross County and Dundee boss, 51, returns to management after leaving Cove Rangers in January.

Dick Campbell left Gayfield last month following the Scottish Cup defeat by League 2 Spartans, having been in charge since March 2016.

Arbroath are second bottom of the Scottish Championship.

Greenock Morton are four points behind with Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Queen's Park one point ahead of Arbroath, who host the former on Saturday.

Jimmy Boyle will be McIntyre's assistant and the new management team will lead training on Tuesday.

"I'm really excited to be here and can't wait to get started," 2016 League Cup winner McIntyre told the Arbroath website., external

"Arbroath have had incredible success, on and off the park, in recent years and have firmly established themselves as a respected Championship club.

"It's my job to embrace everything Arbroath stands for and put a team on the park the fans can be proud of - and I'm looking forward to getting to work."

Chairman Mike Caird added: "This is a crucial appointment for the club and one which required a rigorous selection process. We will give Jim and his staff our full backing."
