Queens Park Rangers boss Marti Cifuentes has told his players that their progress is like rowing a boat.

Rangers have won their past three Championship matches but remain in the bottom three.

The west London club will have the chance to pull out of the relegation zone on Wednesday when they entertain Plymouth Argyle.

"Like rowing, if you stop paddling you will be in trouble," Cifuentes told BBC Radio London.

"We are happy about the three wins in a row - it's a big achievement, but we know football.

"I know that we are going to lose to some games, but I have the feeling that we are building something strong.

"I believe there are good players, and when you have good players everything is easier."

Plymouth are 18th in the table but only three points above third-bottom Rangers as the Championship relegation scrap tightens up.

Rangers would need to win by five goals to overtake the goal difference that the visitors take to Loftus Road, but they well could climb above the three teams immediately above them: Millwall, Stoke City and Huddersfield Town.

"Personally I'm not looking at the table at this moment of the season - for me, it's about performing better," Cifuentes continued.

"It might be some sort of milestone because it's not the position we want to be, but whatever happens I will not change my approach - it's about getting better and better."

Rangers drew their first match under Cifuentes, who replaced Gareth Ainsworth in October, at Rotherham and had to wait until the Spaniard's third match for a victory.

Last Saturday's 2-0 win against Hull City was the 11th point that QPR have claimed since the change of manager.

"I would like to have 18 points instead of 11 so far," said Cifuentes. "It's relative, but we have been better and better since Rotherham to Hull.

"There is clear improvement but we cant expect to be better every game, because sometimes the opponent will be better, but we are building a momentum.

"During the international break we spent quite useful time to work with the squad, and the time between two Saturday games, it was good to working on pressing high.

"The team is pressing better and this is what I want to be a big part of our game."
