Striker Josh Maja is set for a spell on the sidelines

West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan is upset at losing striker Josh Maja "for months" with a fractured ankle following Saturday's unpunished challenge by Sunderland's Dan Ballard.

The summer signing could be out for up to four months with ankle ligament damage, all but ending his season.

And Corberan, speaking after Tuesday's win at Rotherham, remains unhappy.

"One player is going to be months out and the other player did not face any consequences," he told BBC Radio WM.

"Unfortunately we have received the worst news we could receive. He has broken all the ligaments of the foot, of the ankle.

"It is going to be a long-term injury. We still don't know if he will need surgery probably, and he will be out for months.

"It is something to review. We are suffering massive consequences of this tackle."

Already missing luckless main target man Daryl Dike, with a ruptured Achilles tendon, Corberan lost Maja in September when he was injured at Bristol City.

He spent two months out then - and, aside from the fact that Ballard was still on the pitch to score Sunderland's opening goal on Saturday, Corberan is frustrated to lose him a second time, especially having already made it clear how unhappy he was with the challenge.

"It happened before," he said. "When these things happen twice to the same team and to the same player it can create a little bit of frustration because it is something he didn't deserve."

On top of Dike's long-term absence, fifth-placed Albion also lost Matt Phillips last week to a serious four-month hamstring issue.

One piece of positive news as Albion returned to winning ways after two straight defeats was their scorers at Rotherham on Tuesday night.

Grady Diangana got his fourth goal in nine games in the Baggies' 2-0 victory, while Jed Wallace capped his return from a shoulder injury with the late clinching second.
