Will Evans' 15th league goal of the season earned Newport County a point, extending Crewe Alexandra's winless run to seven matches.

After a lacklustre first half, Crewe's Christopher Long grabbed the opener two minutes into the second, reacting to a save from County keeper Nick Townsend.

Evans responded just after the hour mark, equalising off a loose ball in Crewe's box.

Crewe were reduced to 10 men late on as Zac Williams was forced off injured.

County had hoped to earn back-to-back wins for the first time since the end of November, but they were unable to find a winner with Alexandra goalkeeper Tom Booth doing well to stop an effort from Seb Palmer-Houlden in added time.

Newport manager Graham Coughlan said: "Naturally I would have liked three points, I'm not 100 per cent sure we deserved three points.

"I think you looked at probably two tired teams that lacked that bit of energy and intensity. I think that might be a direct consequence of the amount of games in the Christmas period and we've got another one on Monday.

"It always is a tough period and it's those who can dig deep, roll their sleeves up and summon up that bit of energy from deep down that might come out on top."
