Former Southampton FA Cup winner Mel Blyth has passed away at the age of 79.

Defender Blyth was a key member of the Saints side that staged a Wembley upset by beating Manchester United in the 1976 final.

He spent four years at The Dell, making 136 appearances after joining the club from Crystal Palace in 1974.

Blyth formed a solid central defensive partnership with Jim Steele as Lawrie McMenemy's side overcame United at Wembley, courtesy of a late goal from Bobby Stokes.

As well as a six-year stint at Palace, Blyth also featured for Scunthorpe and Millwall and played in South Africa and the United States.

He later ran a building company and also coached Palace's youngsters on a part-time basis.
