Callum Ainley has made seven substitute appearances for Grimsby this season, since joining from Crewe in the summer

Grimsby Town midfielder Callum Ainley has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

The League Two club said the 26-year-old is at home recovering after having surgery and could return to training in the second half of February.

"Callum has shown great strength of character since he received the news and he is currently being supported by the club to ensure he has everything he needs," they said in a statement., external

"We hope to see him back in a black and white shirt very soon."

Ainley's former club Crewe, where he made 278 appearances between 2015 and 2023, are among those to have sent a message of support,, external saying "we are all with you".
