Jonny Stewart hopes Bonnyrigg's cup clash with Aberdeen is 'a special occasion'

Bonnyrigg Rose captain Jonny Stewart says the League 2 side will give it their "best shot" in trying to upset Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup fifth round.

The New Dundas Park side beat Falkirk on Saturday to progress to the last 16 for the first time - and were rewarded with an away tie at Pittodrie.

"It's a great trip for the fans; I'm sure a lot of them will travel up in their numbers and maybe make a weekend of it," Stewart told BBC Radio Scotland.

"I think when you get to this stage of the Scottish Cup, for a club like Bonnyrigg Rose it's all about trying to capitalise financially and get one of the big teams away from home and make it a special occasion.

"It would've been nice to see a Premiership team come to Bonnyrigg and it would've been great for the town, but it's really beneficial for the club to get an away tie and hopefully get a good support up at Aberdeen."

Bonnyrigg - currently fifth in League 2 - ended League One leaders Falkirk's impressive unbeaten run ended at 26 games.

"We went out after the game on Saturday night and celebrated and there were a few sore heads, so everyone was just nursing it and lying watching the fifth round draw on the couch," said Stewart.

"Aberdeen have had a bit of an up and down season but they are still a quality side and obviously quite a bit ahead of us. We'll go up there slightly confident we can cause an upset but we've just got to go and give it our best shot."

Stewart began his career at Hearts but joined Bonnyrigg Rose in 2014 and recently celebrated his decade of service with a testimonial against the Tynecastle side.

The 33 year old added that he and his team-mates had watched on TV as Spartans ran Hearts close in Saturday's early kick-off, and saluted James Craigen's wonder-strike.

"It was a great finish," said Stewart.

"I've scored a couple of volleys actually but they were a long time ago. I think James is a bit better than me technically so I don't know if I could've done that, especially in front of the cameras."
