Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has said he hopes his side will sign Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers on Wednesday.
Rogers, 21, has scored seven goals in 33 games for Championship club Boro this season.
"We analyse him and we follow him with a scout," Emery told TNT Sports after Villa's loss to Newcastle on Tuesday.
"I think he is a potential young player and hopefully tomorrow we can sign him and he can start his new chapter here."
The winter transfer deadline for Premier League clubs is Thursday, 1 February (23:00 GMT).
Aston Villa are fourth in the Premier League, five points off the top but have won just one of their past four league matches.
Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough are four points off the Championship play-off places in 11th.
Earlier in January, Villa signed defender Kosta Nedeljkovic for an undisclosed fee from Red Star Belgrade.
"We are motivated and excited to work with [Rogers] and hopefully he can progress here like we think he will do," added Emery.
