Will Evans scored his 23rd goal of the season to help Newport County see off Gillingham at Rodney Parade.
Both teams cancelled each other out in a forgettable first half, with the best chance falling to Seb Palmer-Houlden who was unable to head home from six yards out.
Evans eventually broke the deadlock on the hour mark with his left-footed strike going in off the far post.
Newport's win moves them to within two points of the League Two play-offs.
Gillingham are three places above them in 11th, just one point shy of the top seven.
Newport County manager Graham Coughlan said: "It was vitally important that we responded to Tuesday's night's game, we didn't do ourselves justice, we were poor.
"I was shouting at the crowd for a little bit of energy, to give us a lift in the last 10-15 minutes because you could see we needed it and I thought they were brilliant, they got us over the line.
"That was a big three points all around, the players, staff, fans, everyone played a part in that today."
