Former Scotland striker Steven Fletcher boosted Wrexham's automatic promotion hopes and dented Notts County's play-off push at the Stok Racecourse.
Fletcher's acrobatic first-half finish proved decisive as the visitors failed to turn their possession into goals,
The visitors thought they had equalised, but David McGoldrick's effort was ruled out for handball.
Wrexham rise a place to third in League Two, two points behind second-placed Mansfield and three behind Stockport.
Notts County drop two places to ninth as new manager Stuart Maynard suffered a first loss.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "It was a hard game, Notts are a good side, we know that. There is always an edge between the two teams. I thought it was a really good game and a great advert for the division.
"In the second half I thought we upped our game for the first 20 minutes, we needed that next goal and it didn't come in that period.
"Obviously towards the end Notts are going to throw caution to the wind and we had to go back into that disciplined mindset.
"I thought the lads put in a real shift today."
