Manager Ian Evatt missed the second half of Bolton's draw at Northampton after being sent off by referee Jeremy Simpson

Bolton Wanderers will appeal against the red cards shown to manager Ian Evatt and midfielder George Thomason in their draw at Northampton Town.

Thomason was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Aaron McGowan in the 28th minute, with Evatt dismissed for an incident in the tunnel at half-time.

Before Tuesday's visit of Wycombe, Evatt was critical of referee Jeremy Simpson's officiating on Saturday.

"I think it was a really poor refereeing performance," he said.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester he continued: "I think there's not many people that would argue with that.

"I had a fantastic view of that at the time. I was stood next to the fourth official who, on comms, was saying 'no red, no red' and the referee made that call.

"You can manipulate the images or the different camera angles. Some make it look worse than it was. I believe he got the ball, he didn't make any contact with the player.

"There's images of their player laughing after the incident. For me it's a foul or a yellow card at most. It's certainly not a red."

Saturday's result was a blow to Bolton's pursuit of automatic promotion, however third-placed Wanderers still have games in hand on League One leaders Portsmouth and second-placed Derby.

When asked about the incident, Evatt was resolute in his defence, suggesting his behaviour did not warrant a dismissal.

"At half-time I articulated the argument clearly - there was no aggression, there was no swearing," Evatt continued.

"But the tolerance level for me compared to their manager was different on the day and I got sent off.

"We'll appeal it and see how we get on."
