Raith Rovers 1-3 Airdrieonians: Kirkcaldy side stumble in title race
- Published
Airdrieonians put a huge dent in the title hopes of Raith Rovers with a thrilling win at Stark's Park.
The Kirkcaldy side remain four points adrift of leaders Dundee United, with only four matches remaining.
The visitors also took a huge leap towards the promotion play-offs as they now hold a six-point advantage in fourth place over closest pursuers Dunfermline.
Airdrie began well and struck with a double within a four-minute spell before the half hour mark.
Captain Adam Frizzell was allowed to stride forward and, as the home defence backed off, the midfielder struck a wonderful shot from 20 yards with the outside of his left boot into the top right corner of the goal.
More poor defensive play by Raith allowed Frizzell the space and time again to pick his spot. This time with a low effort from the edge of the box into the bottom right corner.
Raith boss Ian Murray made three changes at the break with Zak Rudden, Callum Smith and Josh Mullin coming on.
And Mullin pulled one back with a 30 yard strike through a ruck of bodies that gave goalkeeper Robbie Hemfrey no chance.
But, as Raith piled forward in search equaliser, that opened up gaps at the back and it was on the break the visitors wrapped up the victory.
Substitute Lewis McGregor showed great pace and power to fire the ball home with the home defence in his wake.
It means Airdrie have taken 10 league points from their four meetings with Rovers this season.
