Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said Newcastle's difficult season should act as a warning if Spurs secure Champions League football.

Newcastle made a return to European football's elite competition after they finished fourth last season.

But they have struggled with competing on multiple fronts and are 13 points behind fourth-placed Spurs in eighth spot going into Saturday's meeting.

"Certainly there is a cautionary tale there," the 58-year-old said.

"It has been tough on Newcastle this year because the progress last year was fantastic.

"The reward for that was Champions League and this year, for whatever reason, it has made it a really challenging season on all fronts for them."

Postecoglou previously said establishing his brand of football - and not securing Champions League football, despite the positive financial implications - remains the priority in his first season in charge since moving from Celtic last year.

Last weekend Spurs moved ahead of Aston Villa, who face table-topping Arsenal on Sunday, on goal difference having played a game fewer than Unai Emery's side.

However, Postecoglou said participating in the Champions League alongside domestic commitments can place a real strain on a club's resources.

"Getting into the Champions League also means greater demands," the Australian said.

"Demands on players, demands on the squad and you have to be geared up for it or else it can affect all parts of your season."

Spurs are again without forward Richarlison for the lunchtime kick-off against Newcastle at St James' Park, but the Brazil international is expected to be recover from a knee injury for the north London derby with Arsenal on 28 April.
