Former Leicester, Hull and Crystal Palace manager Peter Taylor has been appointed the new boss of non-league Canvey Island.

The 72-year-old began his career as a youth player at the club before moving on to Southend United, Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient, as well as winning four England caps.

He replaces Brad Wellmen, who resigned after The Islanders finished 17th in Isthmian League Premier Division, having been in charge for four years.

Taylor has also managed in India and New Zealand and was England caretaker boss for a game in Italy in 2000 when he gave David Beckham the captain's armband for the first time.

He had two stints as manager of the England Under-21 team and bossed Leicester in the Premier League.

His most recent job in football was as Maldon & Tiptree manager in 2023, which ended when he was sacked just three games into a new season.
