Midfielder George Byers says there "should not be a ceiling" on what Port Vale can achieve this season after the club suffered their first defeat in six games in League One.

Vale's 1-0 loss at Wigan ended an unbeaten run that had seen Darren Moore's side pick up 11 points from a possible 15.

Malaece Asamoah's 56th-minute strike proved enough for the Latics, who played the whole second half with 10 men after Dara Costelloe was sent off.

"We'll look at ourselves," Byers told BBC Radio Stoke. "We've got to do better but it's down to us to be honest, try to regroup, pick ourselves up and go again.

"Every game's going to be different. We should be on top in games, especially against teams that go down to 10 men."

Moore said the defeat was "humbling" and called for his players to "get back to the drawing board" as they prepare for next Monday's visit of Stockport County.

"We've been on a good run and it's not the time to get too down. We've got to pick ourselves up and it's another important week," Byers said.

"I feel like we've got a good group and there shouldn't be a ceiling on what we can achieve.

"We can't get too down. It's a long season."

Byers said the players will get back to "setting the standards" in training and fixing what was not quite right against Wigan.

"The game's not until Monday, so it's a long time to work and we've got to put this result right in the next game," he said.
