'Class' to break Wales scoring record - Fishlock

Jess Fishlock thinks she will look back at the end of her career with immense pride at breaking Wales' goalscoring record.

Fishlock opened the scoring as Wales beat Kosovo 2-0 to seal a seeded spot in the European Championship qualifying play-offs and ensure a return to Nations League group A.

Fishlock's goal, her 45th for Wales, saw her move ahead of Helen Ward in the nation's all-time leading scorer standings.

"It's important we got the win, but once it (the goal) went in, you realise what you've been able to do," she told Match of the Day Wales.

"I'm sure when I look back on my career... it's just class."

Wales are now set to be seeded for the Euros play-off draw on Friday, with Fishlock desperate to qualify for a first major finals in Wales' history.

"We've got a lot of good kids coming through which is huge for us and it's just about moving forward," she said.

"I'm looking forward to the play-offs and just trying to achieve something we've never done before."

Wales captain Angharad James, who like Fishlock has played more than 100 games for her country, says her club and Seattle Reign team-mate is "special".

"She's a special person and a special player," James told BBC Radio Cymru.

"She's changed women's football in Wales and she's continuing to change football in her career.

"She's a special person to have in the group, she's a leader every time she wears that red jersey and I'm so proud of her for breaking the record tonight."

Ward, who retired in March 2023, was at Parc y Scarlets as Fishlock broke her record and says she is pleased for her former team-mate.

"I knew it was coming. It was a little bit sad for me, but I'm genuinely delighted for Jess," she told BBC Radio Wales.

"It's been coming for a while. It was a feeling of genuine pride at being her team-mate for so long and being part of this journey that she's on.

"To witness the goal as well - it's nice to be here and see it in person. I'll make sure I see her after the game to give her a congratulatory hug."

Wales boss Rhian Wilkinson was pleased Fishlock reached the goalscoring milestone in front of her home fans, with just over 4,000 supporters seeing the special moment.

"There wasn't any doubt about Jess breaking the record," she said.

"I'm really happy she got to do that in Wales, in front of her family and in front of the Welsh people. It was a fantastic moment."
