Atletico Madrid defender Robin le Normand suffered a "traumatic brain injury" after a collision late on in Sunday's Madrid derby.
The 27-year-old Spain international clashed heads with Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni in stoppage time of the 1-1 draw at the Metropolitano.
He received treatment on the pitch and the club confirmed he has since undergone "a series of tests and was assessed by specialists".
It has been determined that he suffered a traumatic brain injury with subdural haematoma, bleeding caused by a burst blood vessel near the brain.
Le Normand will now follow "the guidelines set out in the protocol established for this type of trauma", Atletico said, before he can return to action.
The centre-back was part of the Spain side that won Euro 2024 and started the final against England in Berlin.
He joined Atletico from fellow La Liga side Real Sociedad in the summer.
