Shrewsbury's Feeney discharged from hospital

Former Everton youngster Morgan Feeney has made 66 Town appearances since signing from Carlisle United in the summer of 2023

League One bottom club Shrewsbury Town have had their concerns eased over the neck injury suffered by defender Morgan Feeney in Tuesday's loss at Stockport County after he was discharged from hospital.

Feeney was stretchered off after 10 minutes of on-field treatment following a nasty aerial collision at Edgeley Park.

But, although he was taken to hospital, the 25-year-old Liverpudlian has since been discharged.

"We're pleased to confirm Morgan was given a clean bill of health and was discharged from hospital in the early hours of this morning," said a Shrewsbury club statement.

"He went to hospital as a precaution," Town boss Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Radio Shropshire. "He had a crack on his neck, somehow either in the air or when he landed.

"He came off conscious, but obviously you cannot be too careful. And I have to thank my own medical team and the Stockport medical team."

Shrewsbury's single goal loss at Stockport was their third straight 1-0 away defeat - and leaves them still with the joint worst away record in the third tier this season.

Both Shrewsbury and 23rd-placed Cambridge United have each earned just six points out of a possible 42 on the road in 2024-25 - and five of the 12 away goals Salop have scored came in just one afternoon at Crawley in mid-October.

But Ainsworth insists that his side really are close to getting an upturn in results - to try to eat into the current seven-point gap between themselves and safety. And he is ready to "unleash" his team a bit more over the final 19 games of the campaign.

"There was only going to be one team who scored in that final 20 minutes. And that was Shrewsbury Town. And it took a miracle save from Ben Hinchliffe to deny John Marquis," Ainsworth added.

"Shrewsbury have been really good at staying in games since Gareth came in," said Stockport boss Dave Challinor. They obviously tried to nullify things in the first half and knew they'd probably maintain that until they could have a go at it in the last 20 minutes or so."

"We have to start opening up and being a bit more aggressive. We're getting to the stage where we're now going to have to unleash and to start chasing points. I'd just like us now to start at home to Mansfield on Saturday like we finished this one."
