Ten-man Torquay beat league leaders Weston 4-2

Torquay United manager Paul Wotton says his side were terrific as they beat National League South leaders Weston-super-Mare 4-2 with 10 men.

Luke Coulson gave Weston a 16th-minute lead but Lirak Hasani's long-range strike made it 1-1 after 29 minutes.

Will Jenkins-Davies put the Gulls in front five minutes later before Sam Avery equalised in the 42nd minute.

Torquay could have been ahead at half-time but Cody Cooke had a penalty saved in first-half added time after Hasani was fouled.

Hasani was shown a red card three minutes after the interval for a challenge on Reuben Reid, but despite being down to 10 men the Gulls impressed.

Cooke made amends for his penalty miss with two goals in a 10-minute spell to keep the Gulls third in the table.

The win knocks Weston off top spot - Truro City are the new leaders on goal difference after they beat Weymouth 4-1 with Torquay three points behind.

"I just thought we were terrific," Wotton told BBC Radio Devon.

"Some performances out there were heroic really, so all in all a fantastic night for Torquay United."

The win extended Torquay's unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions, but ended a run of three successive league draws.

"Fortunately we came out on top which I think we rightly deserved," Wotton added.

"It had a lot of real key moments in the game, even with 10 men I thought we were brave, we stuck at it, we kept two up top.

"You could have easily sat there and just tried going for a draw, but what's the point? You're better off going for it and trying to get three points."
