Truro City boss John Askey has hailed the commitment of his side's supporters after the longest away trip in the history of English league football.

The Tinners drew 2-2 at Gateshead - a record-breaking 914-mile round-trip for the Cornish side.

Truro were leading 2-0 at half-time, but were pegged back by the hosts after the break before Luke Jephcott missed a good chance at the end to claim three points for City.

"It's a magnificent effort to make the longest journey ever in English football," Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"As we say every week, they're true supporters and they really get behind the players, you very rarely hear anybody moaning.

"If we hadn't got something out of the game and then making that journey all the way here, it would have been gutting really.

"But they deserve the team to do well when you make a commitment like that.

"We'll keep fighting for them and hopefully we keep battling away and we keep getting results."

The draw meant Truro stay in the relegation places in the National League, although their form has seen an upturn in recent weeks.

A loss on penalties to ASFC Totton in their FA Cup replay is the only defeat City have suffered in their last six matches in all competitions.

Having faced almost all of the top 10 in their first 16 games City take on sides in and around them over the next few weeks as they aim to improve on 22nd place.

"If we'd have been putting our chances away then we'd have quite a lot more points," added Askey.

"When you've been two up and they get the tails up, having got back level, you've got to really dig in, and the lads did.

"If you said before the game would you have taken a point? Probably I would. I think, if you look at it, apart from penalties, it's probably six unbeaten.

"So we are getting better, we still need to improve, but it's a gutsy performance again from the players."
