Peterborough United defender Jacob Mendy is facing an extended spell on the sidelines because of a groin injury.

The 28-year-old, who is on loan from Wrexham, suffered the injury in training on Friday and missed the 1-0 win at Burton Albion on Saturday.

Mendy has started five games for Posh in League One since his arrival on deadline day in September.

"He was starting the game and then literally in the last minute of the session, we were just doing a bit on set-pieces, he's felt his groin - we've had the scan results and it's a very bad injury," boss Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"He'll certainly be going back to Wrexham and you're looking at months rather than weeks."

Although the win at Burton lifted Peterborough off the bottom of League One, Ferguson described their first-half performance when on the ball as "appalling" and said he would not be watching a play-back of the game.

"It's a good result, that's always the most important thing, clean sheet, and we defended well against what we knew they would throw at us," he said.

"The stuff we're doing on the training ground, the preparation, I didn't see it. I'm scratching my head, I'm asking the players why - whether it's because they're a lot lower in confidence than I thought they were. It's something I've got to get to the bottom of."

Ferguson said Archie Collins' winning goal, hammered home from the edge of the box was "one bit of quality" in a game in which Posh also had Tom Lees sent off.

He added: "We've had much better performances than that, Huddersfield is a good example, when we played much better - how I want us to play - and we lost.

"I suppose at the moment if we have to play rubbish and win that's the most important thing but I need a bit more than that."

Earlier this month, Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said that although Ferguson deserved "the benefit of the doubt" for the time being, results and the team's style of play must improve.

They will be at home to new bottom club Blackpool on Saturday.
