Assistant head coach Devaney leaves Barnsley

Martin Devaney was caretaker manager when Barnsley lost 5-4 on aggregate to Bolton in last season's League One play-off semi-final

Former player and caretaker manager Martin Devaney has left his role as assistant head coach at Barnsley.

Devaney, 44, made 176 appearances for the Reds between 2005 and 2011 and returned to Oakwell to become an academy coach in 2015.

Then in both 2022 and again last year, he stepped up to the role of caretaker manager for a total of six games, including last season's League One play-off semi-final ties against Bolton Wanderers.

But following the permanent appointment of Conor Hourihane as the Reds' new head coach, Devaney has agreed to leave the club by mutual consent.

"After open and honest discussions, the club and I have mutually agreed that now is the right time to part ways," he told the club's website.

"It is an honour to have been able to represent this club in various capacities. Barnsley means a great deal to me and always will."
