Wycombe Wanderers head coach Mike Dodds insisted "the season's still there to fight for" after a home defeat by Charlton dented their hopes of automatic promotion.

The Chairboys led League One for several weeks earlier in the campaign but are now fighting it out with Wrexham for the second promotion spot behind champions Birmingham City.

The 4-0 loss to Charlton left them third, two points adrift of the Hollywood-backed north Wales club, with just two games left to play.

"The bit I'm going to have an autopsy over is how we go from the best defensive record in the EFL since I've been at the club - and we've prided ourselves on being so well organised - to gifting Charlton four goals," Dodds told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"We've got to take this one on the chin, decompress over the next few days and make sure the next two results are really, really positive.

"There's still everything to play for, the season's still there to fight for and that's why on Friday we didn't overly celebrate (winning 2-0 at Bolton) because the Bank Holiday weekend can throw up all sorts of strange results."

Wycombe have a tough end to the season with a trip to Leyton Orient (currently sixth, in the final play-off spot) followed by a home game against Stockport County (currently fifth, three points behind Wycombe).

And they will hope Charlton can do them a favour when they travel to Wrexham on Saturday.

Dodds said he did not think pressure was the reason for their defeat by the Addicks, just "naive, poor play".

He added: "We did nothing different in terms of our processes, we came into the game full of confidence and had only conceded one goal here (at home) since I've been at the club, and that was deflected, it wasn't even a shot on target.

"It was a really out-of-character performance and I've got to wear that as the leader, the captain of the ship; it was nowhere near the standards required."

Wycombe won promotion to the Championship under former boss Gareth Ainsworth in 2020 but were relegated 12 months later and lost out to Sunderland in the 2022 League One play-off final.
