Erik ten Hag says he and Manchester United "still have to find an agreement" on a new contract.
Ten Hag's future as United manager had been in doubt but the club have decided to keep the Dutchman in place.
However, he is yet to extend his current deal, which expires at the end of the 2024-25 season.
New United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly spoke to former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel over the role but eventually opted to keep Ten Hag, who said he discovered the news while away with his family.
"The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza," Ten Hag, who led United to FA Cup victory in May, told Dutch TV channel NOS.
"They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me. Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager.
"Ineos took their time. They are new in football, it's normal to reflect on the season. It's no secret that they talked with multiple candidates.
"Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn't easily done - we are still going to have to talk about this."
