Wycombe Wanderers boss Mike Dodds believes his side are ready to go the distance in the race for promotion from League One.

Saturday's 1-0 win over Stevenage, secured with an added-time goal by Caleb Taylor, cut the gap between them and second-placed Wrexham to one point.

But their final four games are all against sides currently in the top eight, and all with aspirations to at least make the play-offs.

"If we win 1-0 in the next four games and they're all 92nd-minute winners, we'll give ourselves a real chance of achieving something very special," the former Sunderland assistant boss told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"The Shrewsbury and Reading results [0-0 and 0-1] were really harsh on them and they deserved that for those two results.

"The last two games have been big, big performances from a very together group and we're very much still in it."

The win over Stevenage followed a crucial victory at Huddersfield Town, also by a 1-0 scoreline - but they have not managed to score in the first half of any game since beating Burton Albion on 4 March.

"Towards the end of the season, that first goal is vital, because it changes the whole complexion of the game, the opposition and the way they set up," said Dodds.

"Could we get an earlier goal to calm the nerves? That would be a massive help. But it was never going to be a massive scoring game [against Stevenage], I think they are second in the league for clean sheets.

"And since I've come to the club, our defence has been one of the best in the league so it was always going to be a cagey affair."

Wycombe won promotion to the Championship under former boss Gareth Ainsworth in 2020 but were relegated the following year.

They reached the League One play-offs in 2022 but were beaten 2-0 by Sunderland in the final at Wembley.

"You're only as good as your next game," Dodds said.

"Everyone probably thought after the Reading game 'are they having a wobble? they've drawn one and lost one', but we've put back-to-back wins together with two clean sheets.

"There's going to be loads of twists and turns in this. I know that probably doesn't help the Wycombe fans but I've said all along is that I'm going to be really balanced and level [headed] and trying to keep focusing on what the group needs and that's real consistency.

"If we concentrate on us, we'll be absolutely fine."
