Gillingham striker Elliott Nevitt insists the team are not getting too dispirited despite Saturday's FA Cup exit at Newport County making it seven matches without a win.

The Gills took 21 points in a nine-game unbeaten start to their League Two campaign, but have not won since.

"We just need to stick together," Nevitt told BBC Radio Kent.

"There's nothing else we can do except go on the pitch and be a team, and try and win football games.

"Luck is going to turn, it's not always going to be like this. We just need to stay together and take every game as it comes, and try and win every game."

Nevitt says their lack of luck was shown by the performance of goalkeeper Jake Turner who deputised for veteran Gills keeper Glenn Morris, and made key saves in both the game and the penalty shootout, but ended up on the losing team.

"I thought he was brilliant," Nevitt added.

"He hasn't played a lot of football this year, but to come into a game - particularly one that ended on penalties - I was gutted for him. I thought he deserved the win. All the lads deserved the win, but especially him."

Two Gills substitutes made big impressions, with former Newport loan striker Seb Palmer-Houlden turning in Nelson Khumbeni's assist to equalise at the end of extra time. Nevitt says it is a key factor in their squad dynamic this season.

"It just shows the lads are patient on the bench. We're a team. Whoever comes in, you know what you're going to get. We're going to be hard-working and fight for each other," he added.

'We'll keep going 100%'

Gillingham assistant manager Richard Dobson admitted after the defeat that there was a desperation amongst the squad to return to winning ways.

"I feel we're going into every game to win, and some games - whatever it is - it's just not happening, but we're training hard and will keep speaking to the staff, and we'll keep going 100%," Nevitt added.

Saturday's opening goal was Nevitt's second in four matches, after failing to net in the opening 12 games.

"It doesn't matter who scores. I've said it ever since I signed, doesn't matter who scores as long as we win," he added.

"I scored and Seb scored. Most of the lads have scored in the games. The main thing is the result, and we haven't had them yet, so hopefully they can turn."
