This is the fifth FA Cup tie between Newport County and Gillingham – both sides have progressed twice a piece, with the Welsh side doing so in 1956-57 and 1967-68 and the Gills in 1954-55 and 1969-70.

Gillingham halted a six-game losing run against Newport County with a 3-1 win in League Two in September – the Gills haven’t won consecutive games in all competitions against the Exiles since a run of three in March 1955, one of which was in the FA Cup.

Newport were eliminated in the FA Cup first round last season but haven’t gone out at this stage as a Football League club in back-to-back seasons since between 1979-80 and 1981-82.

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth has been eliminated in each of his last four FA Cup first round ties, all as Wycombe boss between 2018-19 and 2022-23.
