Plymouth Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley hopes the club can agree professional terms with impressive teenager Tegan Finn.

The 17-year-old winger made just his second start for Argyle in the 3-2 Carabao Cup win over Queens Park Rangers.

But he impressed with his incisive running causing a problem for the Championship side's defence for much of the evening.

Finn is still currently on an academy deal but Cleverley is hopeful that will change:

"Those conversations are happening. They were happening before Tegan played outstandingly well on Tuesday," he said.

"We're very keen to tie Tegan down to a professional contract. I think for his future it would be the best thing to stay with us, to develop under us.

"My priority is to win games for this football club, but I also value highly developing the club's young assets and I see Tegan as one of them.

"We could really go on an exciting journey with Tegan and likewise him being with us, I think it would be the best for his future.

"We think a lot of him, I thought he showed how good he can be on Tuesday and he's a live player for us, he's not just a young potential player, he's a real key part of this squad now."

Finn made four appearances last season - starting the 4-0 Boxing Day loss at Coventry City under Wayne Rooney.

He made his first appearance this season as a substitute in Saturday's 2-0 loss at Bolton Wanderers before starting on Tuesday night.

Cleverley says those performances have shown that Finn has the maturity to play at a senior level, despite his young age:

"I thought against Bolton he came in and did great in difficult circumstances," said Cleverley.

"I thought Tuesday, let's not forget he was playing against a first-team player, Harvey Vale, he's not a young player for QPR, he's a first-team player, so I thought he overcame that challenge very well.

"Tegan's got a good head on his shoulders, he's not going to get too ahead of himself, he's got a healthy confidence about him and it's the start of an exciting journey."
