Fleetwood Town defender Denver Hume is recovering after suffering a bleed on the brain after what seemed like "an innocuous collision" in training.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury last month and the League Two side's manager Pete Wild said the severity of the situation had shocked everyone.

"He's been having a battery of testing now for four or five weeks and luckily the good news is that it will heal and he is on the mend," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"He's still got a lot to process mentally from the incident. It's certainly knocked him and us for six because it was so innocuous."

Wild added: "He's been cleared to do some light - very light - exercises and hopefully start a return to more physical life.

"That'll take some time and he's got another follow-up in January, where we'll start to see some more information for where that takes him."

Hume started his career with Sunderland and has also played for Portsmouth and Grimsby.

He joined Fleetwood on a two-year deal in the summer and has made 11 appearances this season.

Wild has not ruled out the chance of him featuring before the end of the campaign but said the player's welfare is the priority.

"There's a possibility he plays before the end of the season but I can't say whether he will or he won't because having sustained this injury it will be down to how he reacts to coming back to physical fitness and how he reacts mentally to coming back to contact football," he said.

"We've got fantastic medical staff here who will support him through this process. We're going to have to take it step by step."

Speaking about the collision, he said: "He's watching the ball and he spins his head and made full contact with someone's knee and he hit the deck straight away.

"When the extent of it came out over the next 24-48 hours... It makes you think about what's really important in life."

He added he'd spoken to Hume this week, saying he seems "in good spirits" and "he's trying to get back to a bit of normality, which is pleasing".
