Philippe Clement addresses 'untrue James Tavernier rumours'

Philippe Clement insists Rangers have received no bids for James Tavernier and says his captain is motivated to "get the love back".

British football's highest scoring defender has been linked with a move to Turkey this summer, with the transfer window still open there.

The full-back, 32, was involved in a verbal confrontation outside Ibrox in the wake of Rangers' 3-0 defeat at Celtic Park on 1 September.

"He never came to my office, 'I want to go' and there was never an offer in that way towards the club," manager Clement said.

"In eight months, I never seen a player making so many transfers because I read so many times that he was going to go there and there and there - and he's still here."

Criticism 'part of of being captain'

Tavernier has made 467 Rangers appearances since 2015, scoring 125 of his 133 career goals for the Ibrox side.

The Englishman has won the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup and led Rangers in the 2022 Europa League final.

However, he has attracted criticism, which Clement says comes with the territory of being skipper.

"It's not a nice thing," said the Belgian.

"If you're captain, you're a symbol of a team and people see you that way. I had the same experience as before in Bruges and I was there 10 years, like Tav.

"In the moments when it's really good, it's really nice to be captain. In moments when the team doesn't perform, it's not only about you, it's about the team and you don't reach the expectations of the fans at moments, you're the first one that they talk to, that they yell to.

"I had these moments also in my career. It's part of of being captain. He takes it really mature and he's very motivated to get really good results the next couple of months and to get the love back of everyone in the club.

"The love is from a lot of people still there and some people were very, very disappointed after the Celtic game, which we can understand because we were also.

"It's easy to run away from your responsibilities. He totally doesn't do that."
