Ben Stokes on the draw being turned down at first: "I think all the hard work was done by India. They both played incredibly well. It got to that point where there was only one result and there was absolutely no chance I was going to risk any injuries to the fast bowlers with one more game to go. [Liam] Dawson’s bowled so many overs in this game, his body started to get a bit tired, bit of cramp in the legs, so I wasn't risking any of my frontline bowlers for that last half an hour."

On how difficult it is to captain a wicket like today's: "It’s one of those where you feel in moments that this is going to be where the game is broken open massively. Getting that KL [Rahul] wicket this morning very early on, gets us back into it, everyone starts perking up a bit more. But you always knew that the quality that India have. If they were able to get themselves in, they were going to be hard to dislodge and they proved that. When you’re bowling on day five you’ve got to move away to different plans, different fields, different ways of trying to make wickets, making batsmen feel uncomfortable in the middle. We threw absolutely everything at them, and they were able to live up to the pressure that was of another day five Test match."

I think it's work in progress for Harry Brook and his off-spin. He might need to do a bit more work in the nets.

More from England captain Ben Stokes to Test Match Special: "When you put in good performances for the team, the joy is dictated by how you feel at the end of the Test and the result. Obviously, I'd give the bottle of champagne and the medal in a heartbeat if we were on the right side of the result.

"It got to that point, we were willing to throw everything at them as we possibly could but it got to that point where there was obviously only one result left on the table and I wasn't going be risking any of my frontline bowlers like that especially with a quick turnaround.

"And the only other person who has got any bowling work load in them is Harry Brook. He does work on that kind of stuff but I did have to say to him to not do anything stupid, you know, we have been out in the field for 200 or some overs, we got a quick turnaround so just do what needs to be done. I said don't do anything daft or pull a hamstring but we knew what was going on there."

The most important thing will be rest and recovery for England and being able to say that they dominated this Test match, but having to admit that the wicket won at the end of the day.

We don't want wickets like this, we want them to deteriorate and wickets like this make batting look very easy on day five - we want jeopardy either towards the end or at the start.

  6. 'Pain is just an emotion'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 27 July

England captain Ben Stokes on his fitness at the post-match presentation: "Not going to lie, I have been better. Pain is just an emotion. You are a bit sore here and there but you'll keep going. I am an all-rounder and it has been a big week this week with overs and spending a bit of time out in the middle, and the workload has obviously gone up but these are very big four Test matches not only for myself but everyone. Hopefully I will be alright going for the last one. I am doing everything possible to be alright (for the last Test)."

On a possible shoulder injury: It's just a workload sort of thing. We got a fair amount of overs and everything starts creeping up on you. I'll keep trying, keep going and as I say to all the bowlers - pain is only an emotion.

"It’s been a big five-six weeks, I’ll always try to give everything I possibly can. I’ll always try to run through a brick wall for the team. Bowling, being out on the field it is tough work. I’m feeling pretty sore."

England captain Ben Stokes certainly looked like he had plenty to say to Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar during that tense little period when they declined to shake hands on a draw.

Would the match have gone differently had this catch been taken?

After Shubman Gill departed, Ravindra Jadeja was almost dismissed for a golden duck, with Joe Root spilling a tough chance in the slips.

Jadeja went on to make a hundred, had he been dismissed might England have run through the remainder of a batting line-up that was already set to be missing Rishabh Pant?

The pitches have been so different from what you usually expect when you come to England because you'd expect lateral movement and there was nothing on this pitch.

  10. 'Wait and see' on Bumrahpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 27 July

More from India captain Shubman Gill at the post-match presentation: "Every match going to the the last session of the last day there are so many learnings. Each Test match teaches you something different. These four Test matches have taught us a lot. Hopefully if we win the next match we can draw the series."

On four centuries in the series: "Every time you wear the whites for your country there are some jitters and that is what tells me how much I care and how much I love this game. Every time I bat I want to enjoy my batting as much as I can."

On whether Jasprit Bumrah will play at The Oval: "I think we will have to wait and see when The Oval Test match comes."

  11. Washington and Jadeja 'deserved' tonspublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 27 July

India captain Shubman Gill at the post-match presentation: "I am extremely pleased with our batting effort over the past couple of days. I think we were put under a lot of pressure, but the way we responded, especially after losing two wickets, was a very brave effort. It's all taking the pitch out of the equation. A day five wicket something is happening, every ball is kind of an event. You want to play it ball by ball and take it as deep as possible."

On if the decision to bat on rather than shake hands on a draw was his or the batters out in the middle: "Definitely it was up to the boys but they batted brilliantly. Both of them were in the nineties, we thought they deserved a century there."

This was England's best performance of the series and they haven't won. From the start with the toss and choosing to bowl, and getting the ball moving and then with the bat in hand with Ollie Pope showing a different technique, then pretty much the batting order batting around Joe Root.

The frustration will be for England not getting any wickets. The pitch had no lateral movements, there was nothing and it was difficult to get 20 wickets on this pitch.

  13. Postpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 27 July

More from India captain Shubman Gill on Test Match Special: "Both the batsmen batted brilliantly. We thought they deserved a century and we thought three or four overs isn't a lot of overs."

On Jasprit Bumrah being available for the final Test: "I haven't really thought about Bumrah playing, once we get there then we will have a look at the wicket but if he feels fully fit and available for us then it will be a great deal for us but if not we still have a good bowling attack with Akash Deep being available for the last Test match and we believe we have a bowling attack that could take 20 wickets."

Shubman Gill didn't rule out that Jasprit Bumrah isn't going to play and he shouldn't have disclosed such information and rightfully so. Tactically you don't want the opposition knowing and if he isn't fit enough then fair enough.

I thought India showed so much more character as I thought they were a broken team at lunch yesterday. They are going to be a dangerous opposition at Oval.

  15. Postpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 27 July

More from India captain Shubman Gill on Test Match Special: "Every time Ben Stokes comes on to bowl he makes something happen. The first spell that he bowled this morning was brilliant and I wanted to take the pitch out of the equation and wanted to play on a normal wicket. But if a ball keeps low or climbs and gets me out, then it gets me out."

On his innings and form this series: "I didn't do well in the previous three innings. Test cricket is a funny game no matter how many runs you score, you always feel the jitters and you just want to do well."

I thought this Test match was closely fought, it's been flowing from one side to another and it's a great way to finish a Test match. But when you look at the England bowling attack this week, they didn't get anything out of the pitch and it was glaring.

  17. Postpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 27 July

India captain Shubman Gill speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "This is no less than a win for us, having [batted again] around 300 runs off the lead, our batsmen put on a great display."

On coming out to bat before lunch yesterday after two early wickets: "As soon as I walked in, I didn't have any thoughts and just wanted to enjoy my batting and play as much as possible without thinking too ahead and just do what I love doing which is batting."

When I look at this young India side, they've done really well. There were a lot of questions before the series started about the bowling unit, young batters and losing the experienced players but they've done well to answer most of those questions

I admired the ending. The young captain and the two out in the middle could have shook hands but they earned the right to get their hundred and have that moment. That dressing room will be absolutely delighted for Washington Sundar for his maiden hundred.

They will look back at their selections as they got that wrong but they have figured out that Ben Stokes is clearly their best bowler.

100 by Washington Sundar was the 11th by India in this series which is the most by any visiting side in England.
